How to Organize Your Kids Closet in Five Simple Steps Using Three Items from The Container Store.

In partnership with The Container Store, I am going to show you how to organize your kids closet in five simple steps!

  1. Empty it out - Take everything out to start with a clean canvas.   Once there is nothing in your closet, take this time to clean the shelves, drawers and the rods.

  2. Detox - Have several trash bags for items you are going to want to donate, sell, or toss. Ask yourself several questions to determine what the correct home for each item is.

    1. How long has it been since your child has worn this?

    2. Does it still fit them, perhaps they have outgrown it?

    3. Is it in good condition?

    4. If this was at the store today would you purchase it for them?

  3. Products that help - For clothes, I recommend investing in Kids White Wooden Hangers, they have a clean design that is sure to brighten up your closet and make keeping it tidy a breeze. For shoes, I use clear stackable drawers like the Farmhouse Storage Cubs from The Container Store which I love because they have an attached lid.  Storage containers with lids are important because they keep everything tidy and in their place. Finally, making organizing fun is key when working with kids. Nobody likes piles of dirty clothes on the floor, and this absolutely adorable Unicorn Hamper is sure to make clean up time fun.

  4. Create zones - Divide your closet in different sections. (Pants, Skirts, Tops, Dresses, Sweaters, etc.) For my eldest daughter, I put all her dresses on the top rack and I put her everyday clothes on the bottom rack.  I do this so she can access her everyday clothes.

  5. Color coordinate - Within each section color coordinate the items. Color Coordinating makes the closet look fresh and neat.

Now that you have done all that work, the most important thing to remember in maintaining a closet organized and decluttered is to follow a rule I like to call The Replacement Method.  This means that every item that comes into the home must replace a pre-existing item. Using this method will ensure that your home is always looking fresh, organized and decluttered.

These five steps are how I always approach organizing a new space. For kids (or really anyone) it is so important to have the right products to make organizing fun and easy and to create zones that help keep your spaces looking great. And remember, to keep from cluttering things up, use The Replacement Method! Enjoy!

NOTE - During the COVID-19 some stores are offering contactless curbside pickup. This is a great opportunity for you to get your items faster. Stay safe!
